As shown in today’s State of Play live, the extra gaming time showed fast-paced open-world action. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s initial footage was shown off at Sony’s State of Play February live stream, confirming that it will be a live-service game focusing on single-player and cooperative gameplay.
Rocksteady Studios, makers of the showcase’s main attraction, provided a wealth of plot information and gameplay video. The 15-minute clip showed off more of the game’s overall structure, revealing that it is an open-world action shooter that combines elements from games like Batman: Arkham Knight and Sunset Overdrive.
The city of Metropolis has been overtaken by Brainiac’s minions and possessed members of the Justice League. It’s up to you to play as one of the four members of the Suicide Squad: Deadshot, Harley Quinn, King Shark, or Captain Boomerang. In the more extended preview, the Squad faces up against a tainted version of Flash, who swiftly gains the upper hand. Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Batman are just a few Justice League members who appear in the trailer.

Every month, on the last Wednesday, Sony announces the PS Plus Essential games for the following month. But that doesn’t always happen. In fact, Sony announces the PS Plus roster on the Wednesday before the first Tuesday of each month. Since that March’s first Tuesday is the seventh, Sony will make their PS Plus announcement on March 1st.

We have no leaks to go on right now, not even bad ones, but we expect to hear something by next Wednesday. If it happens, we’ll update this post.
As of right now, rumors are just as unreliable as facts because there are no solid indicators to depend on. 7ths Romancelvania, a side-scrolling dating simulator set in the vampire subgenre, is the only game we can discover releasing on March 7. We wouldn’t put money into it, but that could happen with PS Plus.
Considering that Sony’s latest virtual reality headset, the PSVR 2, was announced earlier today, it’s also likely that the company will give away a few of them for free in the month of March.

Hogwarts Legacy was the most popular video game in February and so far in 2023. In spite of our enthusiasm, we wish there were more Persona 5 elements in the game.
I’m strolling through Hogwarts, listening to a classical pianist play while being occasionally startled by the presence of a boisterous moving artwork or Peeves the Poltergeist. When a student’s Disillusionment Charm wears off, they appear before my eyes like a shimmering mirage, and the mirrors in the restroom make sarcastic remarks about my appearance when I sneak in there to look for hidden riches.
I’m not really paying attention to the intricate designs carved into stone or floating above my head; instead, I’m frantically mashing the triangle button to have my character use Revelio, a Witcher sense that sounds an annoying bell whenever something significant is in close proximity. For no other reason than to fulfill a collection challenge, I’ve been looking high and low for another Field Guide page to add to my collection.
In Hogwarts Legacy, the open-world RPG concepts that so many J.K. Rowling defenders fight so hard to protect are crammed into your childhood fantasies of attending the wizard school. In a cruel twist of destiny, the game at the center of a cultural conflict ends up undermining the wizarding world by virtue of being, well, a game.
Hogwarts Legacy TikTok is littered with parody videos of Revelio spam. In the books, Revlio is only mentioned sporadically, but in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2017), Newt Scamander uses it to expose Gellert Grindelwald’s true identity. In Hogwarts Legacy, you have constant access to this spell, and you’ll use it so often that the sound of the bell that accompanies it will drive you crazy.
In the Hogwarts Legacy universe, Revelio doesn’t reveal shadowy bad guys or students hiding in the off-limits section of the library; instead, it draws attention to hidden chests of goodies and other explorable areas. You’ll use this charm to peep around corners and spot opponents while collecting Field Guide pages, finding new cosmetic items, or simply exploring the world. Whether you’re merely trying to get 100% or you’re trying to fight spiders in the Forbidden Forest, it’ll come in handy at some point.
But it’s also not the easiest thing to figure out; the range of the chime that lets you know something is nearby is something you can increase along the skill tree. After around six hours, the finicky chime had me searching in vain for the origin of the sound in ever-narrower rooms and corridors. In this present time, I feel anything but amazing. This obsession with perfection has got to stop.
Revelio, if only for the sake of drawing attention to things of interest, would seem to be an essential charm for any Hogwarts student. Considering how easy it is to use a wizard AirTag to find whatever it is that Neville Longbottom has misplaced, he really has no need for a Remembrall to remind him. If Harry could merely Revelio-locate where Ron was in the Great Lake, he wouldn’t have to risk drowning during the Triwizard Tournament. Or maybe you could use it to locate any of Voldemort’s Horcruxes instead of having to track each one down individually?
Spells That Don’t Work Too Well
Hogwarts Legacy pushes Rowling’s canon to its breaking point the more you delve into the game. Dumbledore’s decision to remain closeted until Rowling outed him IRL is even more baffling given that there are more individuals of color at Hogwarts in the late 1800s, as pointed out by Gita Jackson.
There is also a seemingly out lesbian. As Jackson notes, it’s as if the creators want to challenge the established canon but are hampered by the fact that the wizarding world’s guiding principles permeate every aspect of the plot and the characters they’ve created. While well-intentioned, these initiatives have the sense of afterthoughts to the sour shot that is Rowling’s legacy.
Hogwarts Legacy has many elements that feel at odds with the universe it is built on since they go against the tale, which chooses to maintain the status quo when it comes to goblin injustice and house elf captivity. A good example is the instant-cast spell Basic Cast, which allows the user to hurl red sparks at foes, objects, and even farmable resources.
Because it never depletes its power or needs to be recharged, this spell is ideal for use in high-stakes battles, but it isn’t available in the Harry Potter universe. Unfortunately, this is a shame, because having access to this spell would have given Harry a significant leg up in the many battles he faces as a preteen.
Yet Basic Cast does exist to transform your wand into a gun, as Jackson puts it, in an effort to make the game’s combat quicker and more akin to third-person shooters. It’s no surprise that players have swapped out their red oak and dragon heartstring wand for a Glock in the game’s patched versions.
As for Alohomora, the lockpicking spell, it can only be obtained in Hogwarts Legacy by locating statues hidden across the school, Hogsmeade, and the Scottish Highlands and turning them into caretaker Gladwin Moon. When exploring Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll come across three tiers of locks, each of which can only be unlocked by returning one of the 13 statues hidden around the game. Even if this is a simple fetch mission with a decent reward, the act of picking these locks feels very non-magical, like some kind of fucking lockpicking mechanic.
Lockpicking mechanics in Hogwarts Legacy feel about as magical as ceremoniously bashing the door down like that Big Bird meme, despite being notorious in the RPG world (how many lockpicks did you break in Skyrim, be honest). In order to open a locked door, you must first click a button to cast Alohomora, then use the two joysticks to rotate separate pieces of the lock until a red and green spark lines up with their respective channels, and finally, *poof*! The Hogsmeade resident has left his door unlocked, so feel free to rob him and help yourself to the chest inside. Surely a hairpin would have sufficed for that purpose.

Pardonable Curses
In my twenty or so hours with Hogwarts Legacy, I have yet to learn any of the Unforgivable curses. There were a lot of uproars when it was made clear that your character might study and employ the three curses collectively known as The Worst Crap You Can Possibly Do in the history of the cosmos.
After all, in the novels and movies, if you pronounce one of the spells (Crucio, Imperio, or Avada Kedavra), you’ll end up in jail where they torture inmates’ minds. One of the spells causes excruciating pain, another converts individuals into puppets, and the third kill on contact.
Nevertheless, in Hogwarts Legacy, not only can you master these three curses, but you can hurl the most wicked spells in the franchise at goblins, spiders, and trolls with equal abandon. Nobody from the Aurors will ever show up at your home without a warrant, so you can keep on your shopping spree without fear of repercussions.
I’ve already killed a good number of NPCs in a variety of shockingly graphic ways, such as shrinking and squishing a huge spider under my boot, repeatedly smashing a poacher into the ground with a flick of the wrist, or exploding a goblinoid, all thanks to Ancient Magic, a lore-breaking mechanic that allows you to access a magical power the protagonist has that has never been mentioned in any Harry Potter works before and which you can access.
Since I am already a lethal machine, it seems pointless to work up to receiving a curse that can eventually one-hit-kill adversaries, especially since such curses have a well-established reputation for being bad in canon. Don’t forget the time Harry tried to curse Bellatrix Lestrange with the Cruciatus.
Remember how she laughed hysterically at the brief suffering he caused her, and how lore fans rationalized this away by saying that he couldn’t have cast an Unforgivable curse since he was too good at heart? But now, a hero endowed with old magic, apparently selected for their bravery, may easily cast such curses? Make some sense!
It’s true that dissecting the inner workings of a role-playing game can feel like excessive nitpicking. Criticizing how Hogwarts Legacy’s RPG-isms break that world’s lore seems like an apt counter when people who still vocally support the Harry Potter franchise use the magic of its world as an excuse to support J.K. Rowling either socially or financially, when they resurrect the feeling of fluttery magical excitement you’d get as a child cracking the spine on one of the books, and when they romanticize characters who themselves are harmful stereotypes.
Hogwarts Legacy’s universe isn’t perfect, and it’s not immune to criticism. Although its fair share of fun moments, Hogwarts Legacy isn’t quite as enchanted as it portrays itself to be.

We met with the game’s Lead Player Investment Designer Anthony DiMento and Lead Writer Rich Gaubert to learn more about the design and development of the game’s most memorable optional objectives.
The optional quests in God of War: Ragnarok are meant to deepen not only the game’s setting but also its characters and the themes that emerge from their adventures.
“We had a better sense of what we wanted from side quests this time. And I think that the impulse for many developers is to use them to flesh out the world and its lore.” Gaubert explains. “While that’s certainly part of it, we didn’t want that to be the main focus. The focus is on these characters and themes and ensuring that the critical path, storyline, and side quest storylines are pieces in a larger puzzle. That lore and world-building should be byproducts of exploring the characters rather than the other way around. It’s too easy to get lost in the minutia if it’s not anchored by characters, as they’re easier to relate to.”
The first Favor in the game, In Service of Asgard, is a perfect illustration of this method in action. In order to complete this quest, Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir must face Mimir’s failed attempts to gain Odin’s favor in the past, such as convincing the dwarves of Svartalfheim to construct mining rigs to generate resources for Odin. As a result of the mining, the environment was harmed and Svartalfheim’s resources were depleted; now Mimir wants to repair the damage and clear his guilt.

Mimir’s strong hate of Odin is further explained by the events of The Favor, which also reflects on the greater subject of not escaping from the past, an issue with which Kratos has struggled. Despite the fact that Kratos isn’t the main attraction of the Favor, the developers at Santa Monica Studio were able to shed new light on the God of War by having him help Mimir make amends for his time spent working for a cruel master, a story beat that allowed them to explore many deeper themes relating to both characters, such as personal accountability and repentance.
“It’s all about staying on target with your themes and having your supporting characters serve as mirrors of your hero, showing what may be a path not taken, or serve a warning of what might happen if the character stays on the course they’re on,” Gaubert continues. “They’re reflections of your hero, and we certainly apply that philosophy to our story in general, but also to the side quests and how they should serve the big picture.”
In Search of Regularities
The Player Investment team had to make a number of important choices before they could begin writing the storylines for the God of War Ragnarok side missions. When designing the game, it was crucial to answer questions like, When and where should these quests open up? and Are the characters who drive the narrative going to have identical motives before and after Ragnarok?
The freedom the players had in deciding when and how to complete the objectives was crucial in making the world feel alive and active:
“We wanted the world to feel connected and alive,” DiMento states. “We never want the player to regret their decision not to do a side quest as soon as it becomes available or if they decide to go back to it after the main story is completed. We just want you to play the content and to be able to enjoy it regardless of when you engage with it.”
However, there were several problematic elements that the team had to account for while adopting this design concept, such as characters quitting the party.
“In God of War Ragnarök, we have a bigger cast than in the previous game, but many of them are limited to specific parts of the story. So, we started looking for constants. Characters we would be able to lean on to help drive some of these quests. It was one of the big challenges of the side quests, but it was exciting to solve. In Service of Asgard was our first test to see if this would work. I went to the writers looking for a constant and they agreed to my suggestion of Mimir. There were moments in the beginning where we would leave him behind, but then we rewrote things to ensure he was always there while exploration was available.”
Those who have completed the main plot will know that the team had to take into account an extra layer of complexity when designing Favors that can be played at any time, not just before or after the main tale. It was important that Kratos be accompanied on his side adventures by a cast of people, each of whom would bring a unique perspective to the table.
The heartbreaking film Favor, The Weight of Chains is a perfect illustration of this. The Lyngbakr, a large whale-like creature, is the focus of this side quest since it represents another of Mimir’s earlier mistakes made while seeking to impress the All-Father at the expense of innocents.
Mimir left the Lyngbakr bound for millennia after harvesting its blubber to generate oil for Odin, expecting the matter would resolve itself with the monster’s eventual death rather than making the hard option to kill the beast himself or let it go and risk the wrath of All-Father. To Mimir’s utter dismay, the crew learns that the Lyngbakr is still alive, albeit imprisoned in a state of eternal misery. They decide to aid the beast in the hopes it can live out its days in peace.
It’s easy to overlook how important this Favor is to Kratos, Mimir, Freya, and Atreus if you simply look at them in isolation.
“That one was very fertile for us because it’s a reflection of the whole cast,” Gaubert states. “It’s obvious for Mimir and Kratos because they literally have been captive. But it’s also a reflection of Freya, who’s been trapped in Midgard for so long, and, before that, a toxic marriage. And it even applies to Atreus, a son metaphorically trapped in the role his family has cast him in that he so desperately wants to escape.”
The team created this quest so that you might learn more about these individuals and the world they inhabit, regardless of when or with whom you set out on your journey.
Inspiring Change in the Protagonist
Santa Monica Studio also had to think about how to make Kratos’ participation in side quests feel natural given that they are, by definition, optional. From the previous game, he has changed from a cynical realist to a caring father as part of his arc. Kratos went through a lot of changes in God of War (2018), but the developers still recognized it would feel fake if he agreed to do anything for anyone.
“It was that softening of Kratos that made it possible for us to have side quests,” DiMento said. “I don’t think they would have worked with the laser-focused killing machine he once was in the previous games. But we kept his stoicism intact by giving him personal reasons to partake in these side quests.”
“There generally tended to be an ulterior motive for him doing good. Otherwise, it would have felt false.” Gaubert continued. “Especially in the early parts of the game where he’s less altruistic and more protective of what he has. But in the post-game, the implication is that he is doing these side quests for unselfish reasons. So, building in those motivations from the get-go helped reduce the number of alternate lines we would have to write to account for his shifting motivations throughout the main story.”
In the Secret of Sands, Kratos performs a nice deed for both selfish and selfless reasons—as is the case with many Favour. The adventure begins when Atreus hears Hafgufa’s scream of pain and the party sets out to rescue the monster from its tendril prison. The Secret of Sands is the first part of a two-part story, the second of which is titled The Song of Sands, and both show how much Kratos has developed as a parent and how much he cares about Atreus’ individual preferences and priorities over the course of their time together.
“Kratos’ character growth continues as you choose to go off the beaten path and do the side quests. I think that’s something both the player and Kratos can realize along the way.” DiMento said. “In The Secret of Sands and The Song of Sands, if you do that story with Atreus, has him constantly asking Kratos, ‘Why are we doing this? Why do you want to help this animal?’ And then you get this really beautiful punchline-like moment of Mimir being like, ‘He’s doing this just because he wants to spend time with you.’”
You’ll learn more about the development of Kratos and Atreus’ connection as you progress through this Game. Kratos’s development as a person has allowed him to not only show a greater appreciation for his son’s values but also the initiative to put those values into practice without waiting for Atreus to request it. Kratos decides to aid the Hafgufa so that he can spend time with Atreus engaging in an activity that he knows will be meaningful to his son.
The effort put in by Santa Monica Studio to make these optional excursions a reality is unquestionable. Gaubert emphasized how great it is to spend more time with the game’s characters in order to bring them to life and stress the game’s themes. Even more importantly, as DiMento emphasizes, this success is due to the team’s combined efforts.
“The people at the studio across the board just have such a high bar for what we’re doing,” DiMento said. “We’re all just motivated by this desire to do great work. Being able to bring so many departments together to create this content and to do it in a way that was a little different than the critical path. To make the most of what we had was incredibly satisfying.”

You can earn the Bigness Ski masks by finishing the tenth Fooligan Task in the series. These masks are available for free in both black and white in the game.
